Teachers Registration Board of the Northern Territory

Teacher education

The Teacher Registration Board (the Board) has a statutory responsibility under the Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act (the Act) to ensure that only persons who are fit and proper, and who are appropriately qualified, are employed as teachers in the Northern Territory.

The Act makes provision for the Board to fulfil this responsibility in a number of ways, including through involvement in pre-service teacher education. The Act requires the Board to accredit teacher education courses in relation to standards, to assess the relevance of courses to the teaching profession in the Territory and to make recommendations to the Minister for Education in relation to the minimum qualifications and other requirements for registration.

Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs

Initial teacher education programs are accredited by the Board and are recognised nationally to ensure all teachers are prepared to a high standard, and gain the knowledge, skills and experiences to make a positive impact on student learning. Minimum requirements are agreed to nationally and described through the Standards and Procedures December 2018 and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs in Australia June 2016. Programs which provide the necessary skills, knowledge and experiences for those entering the profession are referred to as preservice or initial teacher education (ITE) programs.

Graduates of initial teacher education programs approved or accredited by the Board are eligible for teacher registration in the Northern Territory. Eligibility is also subject to English language requirements where applicable and suitability to teach requirements. To be eligible for registration as a teacher in the Northern Territory you must be able to communicate in spoken and written English at a professional level with students, parents, teachers and others.
