Renewal of registration

In October of the year in which your registration expires, you will be sent a renewal notice. You will be given the option to renew your registration for up to five years. No documents are required for renewal but you will be required to update your statutory declaration. You should return the renewal notice with payment and completed statutory declaration before your current registration expires. Your new registration certificate will be posted to you as soon as the payment has been processed.

Failure to renew before the expiry date may mean that teachers are required to submit a new application form and pay for a new Criminal History Record Check. Teachers can elect to register for up to five years.

Please identify which payment option you have chosen by completing Part 2 (Payment Details) of the renewal form.

I don’t have a cheque book or a credit card. How can I pay for my renewal fee?

Purchase a Money Order from Australia Post or a Bank Cheque from your local bank (Money Orders are less expensive). The TRB office will also accept credit card payments from a third party (e.g., employer, friend or family member). Please do not send cash to the TRB office.

Do I need to supply any documents with my application for registration renewal?

No documents are required for registration renewal but applicants for renewal are required to complete a Statutory Declaration stating they have not, during their last period of registration, either been the subject of disciplinary proceedings or been charged or convicted of a criminal offence or had their registration as a teacher in another jurisdiction cancelled or suspended or conditions imposed. Teachers who have matters to declare are required to supply further details in a letter addressed to the TRB Director.

I have changed my name. Do I need to supply documentary evidence?

Teachers who have changed their name should complete a Change of Details Form and include a certified copy of their Marriage Certificate or Change of Name Certificate.

What disciplinary proceedings do I need to declare?

Please tick 'yes' to Question 1 in Part 3 (Statutory Declaration), Section A of the form if you have been the subject of disciplinary proceedings in the workplace or in relation to your occupation as a teacher during your last period of registration. This can include being the subject of an investigation by your school or HR department for alleged misconduct or incompetence at your school. It can also include being cautioned, fined, transferred, demoted, stood-down or dismissed for alleged or actual misconduct or incompetence as a teacher.

What criminal offences do I need to declare?

Please tick 'yes' to Question 2 in Part 3 (Statutory Declaration), Section A of the form if you have been charged with, or convicted of, an indictable offence during your last period of registration. Not all offences are indictable. Please refer to the Guide to Indictable Offences.

What registration issues do I need to declare?

Please tick 'yes' to Question 3 in Part 3 (Statutory Declaration), Section A of the form if you have (or had) registration as a teacher in another jurisdiction (e.g., another state, territory or country) and that registration was cancelled or suspended or conditions were imposed during your last period of registration.

Do I need to declare matters that had arisen in previous years?

If you have matters that you have declared to the TRB previously, then you do not need to declare them again. However, if you have matters that you have never declared to the TRB, then you should provide full details in a letter marked ‘Confidential’ and addressed to the TRB Director.

Why does the TRB ask teachers to declare matters?

One of the objectives of teacher registration is to ensure that only persons who are fit and proper are employed as teachers in the Territory. A teacher is entitled to registration if the TRB is satisfied that he/she is a fit and proper person. This includes being competent to teach, being of good character, and not being disqualified from registration as a teacher in another jurisdiction.

What happens once I declare a matter to the TRB?

The TRB will determine whether the matter is serious enough to warrant investigation. If the matter goes to an inquiry, the outcome could be the imposition of conditions on your registration, or your registration could be suspended or cancelled. Alternatively the TRB could determine that the matter being inquired into is without substance or lacks sufficient substance to warrant conditions, suspension or cancellation.

Who can witness my Statutory Declaration?

You should sign Section B of Part 3 (Statutory Declaration) of the form before a witness aged over the age of 18 years. You do not need to sign it before a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Oaths.

What does the TRB office do with my registration renewal form?

As soon as the TRB office has confirmed that your application for registration renewal is complete and is satisfactory, the renewal is entered on the data base with your new expiry date. We then send your form to the Receiver of Territory Monies (RTM) for your payment to be processed. Once your payment has been processed by the RTM, you will be sent a receipt and a replacement TRB Registration Card. Your receipt and your registration card will be sent separately, with the receipt coming from the RTM and the card coming from the TRB office.

How long do I have to wait to receive my receipt and my registration card?

There frequently is a delay of up to six weeks in processing payments. Once your payment has been processed and you receive your receipt, your card should follow a week or two afterwards.

While I'm waiting to receive my RTM Receipt and my TRB Registration Card, how can I check that the TRB has received my renewal form?

You can confirm that the TRB office has received your renewal form by searching the Online Register of Teachers. If we have received your renewal form and it is complete, you should be able to find your name, your TRB number and your new expiry date.

What happens if I don't renew my registration by 31 December?

Teachers whose registration expires will automatically be removed from the Online Register of Teachers on 1 January.
