Teachers Registration Board of the Northern Territory

Criminal history checks

All applicants for teacher registration must complete a criminal history check at the time of applying for registration. Information received through these processes will be stored in secure files at the office of the Board. They will be used only for the purposes of registration as required under the legislative provisions for confidentiality.

Australian criminal history clearances

If you are currently living in Australia or have ever lived in Australia you must arrange for the Board to be provided with the results of a National Police Check issued by the NT Police.

The NT Police has a business unit that has sole responsibility for criminal history record checks for employment purposes in the NT. This unit is called SAFE NT (Screening Assessment For Employment NT).

It is mandatory for teachers to hold a NT Working With Children Clearance for employment purposes as well as a National Police Check for registration purposes.

The TRB recommends all applicants for registration and authorisation apply for a Working With Children Clearance (Ochre Card) and as part of the online application tick ‘Notify the Teacher Registration Board’ to allow SAFE NT to forward the police check results directly to the TRB office. If you are completing a hard copy application please sign the ‘Teachers only’ release under Section D.

New applicants for registration and authorisation who hold a Working With Children Clearance will need to apply for a current (no older than 3 months) National Police Check through SAFE NT. Please visit the SAFE NT website for an application https://forms.pfes.nt.gov.au/safent/. You will have the option to lodge an online or hard copy form.

Overseas criminal history clearances

If you have lived overseas you must provide an original criminal history clearance from any jurisdiction in which you have lived for 12 months or more in the last 10 years or since attaining the age of 18 years. Applicants in this category are encouraged to contact the Board to discuss your individual circumstances and the Board's requirements. Please visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website for information on the process for sourcing the required criminal history clearances from overseas countries.

NT Working With Children Clearance (Ochre Card)

Each time a registered teacher renews their Working With Children Clearance (Ochre Card) it is recommended they provide their consent for SAFE NT to release their criminal history record details to the Board.

To ensure the Board receives the National Police Check results from the Ochre Card teachers must consent to the release of their results by:
  • Online application - tick the box to ‘Notify the Teachers Registration Board’ and confirm their consent
  • Hard copy application – sign the ‘Teachers only’ release under section D
