Professional standards

The Northern Territory professional standards for Teachers fulfils the TRB NT’s statutory requirements under section 11 (f) and (h) of the Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act 2004.

The professional standards provide:

  • a clear public statement regarding the standards of the profession
  • a basis for self-regulation
  • a seamless guide for professional development for preservice teacher education through to established professional practice
  • a focus for teachers to evaluate and analyse their practice and plan for professional development.

Statement of Ethics

A code of ethics for Territory teachers currently is being prepared. In the meantime there is a need to indicate in broad terms the core values that underlie the professional standards. The teaching profession is unique in that it has ethical responsibilities through relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the wider community.

Teaching is a moral craft and teachers have to make ethical decisions daily. The maintenance of a code of ethics by the profession will provide a means of clearly identifying the values held by teachers and communicating those values within the profession and the community.

Project

The TRB’s Professional Standards and Ethics Committee is developing the standards in wide consultation with the profession.

Posters and brochures for the competent and graduate teacher standards are available. Contact us at trb@nt.gov.au
