Teachers Registration Board of the Northern Territory

Edition 1, February 2009

This is the first edition of the TRB Update for 2009. If you know a teacher who has not received an email from the Board, please encourage them to advise the Board of their current contact details. Message from the Board Chair

Registrations

There are currently just over 5000 teachers registered in the Northern Territory.

Since August 2008, around 575 new teachers have been registered to teach and the new registrations are evenly divided between teachers registering from other states and New Zealand under the Mutual Recognition arrangements and those registering under the provisions of the Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act (the Act).

The Board extends a warm welcome to all teachers newly registered in the Northern Territory and particularly graduate teachers who are joining the profession for the first time.

Code of Ethics

The Board has a legislated responsibility under the Act to develop, maintain, promulgate and apply a code of ethics for the teaching profession in the Northern Territory.

In late 2008, the Board undertook a first round of consultations on the draft Code of Ethics for Northern Territory teachers. The Professional Standards and Ethics Committee (PSEC) has responsibility for this project and welcomed the feedback received from teachers and other stakeholders. The Board is now circulating a revised draft Code of Ethics for final comment due 27 February 2009 after which we will proceed to publication. Your feedback is invited once again.

Standards of Professional Practice - new posters

In the coming weeks, all schools will receive posters that are a compilation of the Northern Territory Standards of Professional Practice for Graduate, Competent and Accomplished Teachers.

The Board compiled and published the Standards posters in response to requests from teachers to assist in mapping career pathways using the Northern Territory Standards of Professional Practice.

Annual Report 2008

The Minister for Education and Training received the Teacher Registration Board Annual Report on 30 September 2008 which is now published on the TRB website.
