Teachers Registration Board of the Northern Territory

Edition 5, October 2010

This is the fifth edition of the TRB Update for 2010. If you know of teachers who have not received an email from the Board, please encourage them to advise the Board of their current contact details.

Update – Fourth edition

The fourth edition of the TRB Update can be found on the TRB Update page. Technical glitches with transferring to a new database meant that we were unable to email all registered teachers that TRB Update no. 4 had been published.

Registrations

As of 25 October, there are 6070 registered teachers in the Northern Territory.
As of 1 September, new applicants for registration are granted either provisional or full registration.

Payment of annual fee

In the week beginning 8th November 2010, all registered teachers with a financial expiry date of 31 December 2010 will receive by post advice that the payment of their annual registration fee is due. Further information about payment options for 2010 will be provided in the next TRB Update

Inside Teaching – October edition

In the October edition, Inside Teaching visits Adelaide’s Golden Grove education precinct to find out how the co-location model works for three high schools; talks with poet Les Murray about his best teachers; reports on a five school research project in Western Australia investigating the efficacy of professional learning in relation to reading instruction; looks at how teachers can use individual student NAPLAN data to personalise teaching for each student; gets up close and personal with Brian Caldwell; examines research on the relationship between a student’s academic self-concept and their performance at school; and much more.

The Initial Teacher Education Committee (ITEC)

The ITEC fulfils the functions of the Board outlined in Section 11 (d) of the Act which is to accredit education courses and liaise with institutions providing education courses. The Committee has the following terms of reference:

  • To advise the Board and make recommendations on the assessment and accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs
  • To ensure graduates meet the Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers in the Northern Territory for the purposes of teacher registration.

The members of ITEC are:

  • Sue Crowe (Chair), Principal, Braitling Primary School
  • Melodie Bat, senior lecturer, Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education
  • Elizabeth Mountford, Practising teacher, Darwin High School
  • Tania Paull, Practising teacher, The Essington School
  • Cameron Hughes, Practising teacher, St John's College
  • Lola Sleep, Practising teacher, Kormilda College
  • Margie Kesby, Senior Curriculum Manager, Department of Education and Training
  • Martin Trouw, Assistant Principal, Dripstone Middle School

In the coming months ITEC members will have a key role in advising the Board on the proposed national system for the accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs currently being developed by the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITLS) in consultation with key stakeholders.

A list of initial teacher education programs approved by the Teacher Registration Board (under the old Act) can be found on the Teacher education page.
