This is the third edition of the TRB Update for 2009. If you know a teacher who has not received an email from the Board, please encourage them to advise the Board of their current contact details.
Research Digest
The second edition of the Research Digest Talking to learn: Dialogue in the classroom is now available on the TRB website.
This edition is focused on research studies about using classroom talk to improve learning, and particularly on the use of teaching methods incorporating classroom dialogue. A selection of websites is listed and a full reference list provided. Links to those references for which full-text online access is freely available are also included.
Teachers who recently held registration in other jurisdictions will be familiar with the Digest. The New South Wales Institute of Teachers commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to publish the Digest and it has then been made available to all the teacher regulatory authorities.
There will be four editions of the Research Digest published this year.
New staff in the Office of the Teacher Registration Board
Ms Aphrodite Georgiadis is currently filling the position of Registration and Administration Assistant.
Mr John Sarev has taken leave from his membership of the Teacher Registration Board to take up a part time appointment with the Board as a Special Projects Officer. John is developing the policy guidelines for the introduction of provisional registration and registration renewal requirements. This is a significant new direction for the Board and more information will be published in the final update before the end of the school year.
New Board members
The Board welcomes three new members.
Mr Chris Tudor AM is nominated by the Association of Independent Schools, Northern Territory (AISNT). Mr Tudor is the Principal of St Philips College in Alice Springs and the Chair of AISNT. Mr Tudor replaces Malcolm Pritchard who resigned from the Board following his appointment to a posting in Hong Kong. The Board has expressed its appreciation to Mr Pritchard for his contribution.
Ms Susan Stanaway is nominated by the Australian Education Union, Northern Territory Branch and fulfils the requirement of the Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act for the AEU to nominate a teacher who is based in a remote school. Ms Stanaway is the Learning Centre Coordinator at Nhulunbuy High School and previously was the Special Education Advisory Teacher for the Arnhem Regions serving 15 schools and homelands across the region.
Ms Lorraine Hodgson is nominated by the Northern Territory Joint Council of Professional Teaching Associations (NTJCPTA) . Ms Hodgson is the alternate member during John Sarev's leave of absence from the Board. Ms Hodgson is the Assistant Principal at Nemarluk School.
1800 number
The Board now has a 1800 number which means teachers may contact the Board without incurring the cost of the telephone call. The number is: 1800 110 302.
Professional Learning Writing Day
Growing and Sustaining Professionalism: Professional Learning and Teacher Registration
On Friday, 11 September, the Board conducted a Workshop around Professional Learning. 28 teachers from across the Northern Territory came together to assist the Board in developing its thinking about how Professional Learning will enable graduate teachers in their transition to becoming competent teachers and how competent teachers maintain and develop their practice against the Northern Territory Standards of Professional Practice for Teaching - Competent level. The day was highly productive and focused on, among other things, developing an appropriate definition of Professional Learning as well as exploring and identifying appropriate evidence that might demonstrate Professional Learning against the NT Standards. The outcomes of the Workshop will shortly be available on the Website.
Refresh of our corporate image
The Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory has recently refreshed its corporate image and has released its new logo. You can expect TRB letters, registration cards and publications to incorporate the new letterhead and colours. Also, this week sees the introduction of Interim Certificates of Registration which further incorporate the new letterhead and colours.

The TRB website has been redesigned and has a fresh, new look. The purpose of the site is to provide ease of access to information regarding Teacher Registration in the Northern Territory. Over the coming months, the website is going to become a crucial site for information regarding the changes to Teacher Registration in the Northern Territory. As new initiatives are implemented, the website will be the hub from which we will disseminate information to teachers in the Northern Territory.

If your registration expires at the end of this year, now is the time to renew your registration. Renewing registration now will save you time at the beginning of the 2010 school year.
