Teachers Registration Board of the Northern Territory

Edition 4, September 2008

This is the fourth edition of the TRB update for 2008. If you know a teacher who has not received an email from the Board, please encourage them to advise the Board of their current contact details.

Code of Ethics

All registered teachers are invited to provide feedback on a draft code of ethics.

The Board has a legislated responsibility under the Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act to develop, maintain, promulgate and apply a code of professional ethics for the teaching profession in the Northern Territory.

Teaching is a moral craft and teachers have to make ethical decisions daily. The maintenance of a code of ethics by the profession will provide a means of clearly identifying the values held by teachers and communicating those values within the profession and the community.

In its first years, the Board developed a statement of ethics for Northern Territory teachers. The statement of ethics indicates in broad terms the core values that underlie the professional standards.

In August 2008 the Board’s Professional Standards and Ethics Committee developed a draft code of ethics. The draft was written by PSEC members Natalie Hyde (Chair), Donessia MacDonald, Julie House and Brenda Keenan and also Writing Day participants Fay Genuth and Elizabeth Mountford. The authors welcome your feedback in developing this document. The deadline for submissions is Monday 20 October 2008.

Registration renewal

In the coming weeks teachers whose registration expires on 31 December 2008 will receive registration renewal notices. This year just over 3700 renewal notices will be sent out.

If your registration expires at the end of this year and you do not receive a registration renewal notice in the next few weeks it is probably because we do not have your current postal address. You will need to complete the Change details form.

If you are not sure when your registration expires you can check by searching the Online Register.
